Centered around the life and contributions of Savitribai Phule, a pioneering figure in the advancement of women's education in India this theatre piece is deeply moving yet personal.. Portraying her journey, the play highlights Savitribai's unwavering dedication and courage in challenging societal norms of her times.
Inspired by her husband, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, a visionary reformist, Savitribai emerges as a dynamic figure, establishing her own identity as a proactive administrator and decision-maker. Actively involved in various endeavours such as managing orphanages, assisting widows, and organizing food aid during crises like droughts ,Savitribai epitomizes strength and unwavering dedication in the face of adversity and oppressive societal norms.
The performance underscores the intensity of Savitri and Jyotiba’s struggle, marking the first-ever experiment in Theatre journalism where Savitri speaks to the audience in the present day.
About the Director - Sushma Deshpande:
Known for her passion, dedication, and multifaceted talents, Sushma Deshpande is a renowned figure in the world of experimental theatre. With over 45 years of experience in the industry, she has left an indelible mark through her work as a writer, director, actor and advocate for social change.
Theatre has been the cornerstone of Sushma Deshpande's career, serving as her primary medium of expression and activism. Throughout her illustrious journey, she has portrayed strong women personalities through her iconic plays, Vhay, Mi Savitribai, Baya Daar Ughad and Aaydaan to name a few.
Having mastered the techniques of the Theatre of the Oppressed, she works closely with marginalized communities such as sex workers and transgenders and rural women, tackling complex themes with depth and authenticity. While her roots lie firmly in theatre, Sushma Deshpande has also left an indelible mark in the world of cinema, captivating audiences with her nuanced performances in select films such as Umbartha, Aaji and My Mother’s Girlfriend.
Recipient of several prestigious awards including Savitribai Phule Puraskar, Maharashtra Foundation award and ZEE award, Sushma Deshpande continues to inspire audiences with her talent and steadfast dedication to highlighting marginalized voices through theatre and film.
Shubhangi Bhujbal -
She has completed a Masters in Theater Arts from the Academy of Theater Arts at the University of Mumbai.
She has been performing on stage for the last 20 years and has played roles in various plays like 'Sangeet Baya Daar Ughad', 'Aaydan', 'Zulva', 'Sangeet Ekach Pyala', 'Thasht', 'Gholaat Ghol', 'Jugaad' etc. While performing on stage she has had the opportunity to work with stalwarts like Bhalchandra Pendharkar, Prof. Jayde Hattangadi, Prof. Waman Kendre, Sushama Deshpande, Shivdas Ghodke, Vijay Kenkare, Sanjay Pawar, Chandrakant Kulkarni.
Presently she is performing in three plays, namely 'Vhay Mi Savitribai', 'Udhwast Dhamashala' and 'Janmawari'.
Similarly, she also plays roles in Hindi-Marathi films, TV series, web series and advertisements.
She has played roles in some significant Hindi movies like ‘Bombay Talkies’, ‘Aapke Pados Me’, ‘Kutte’ etc. and in Marathi films like 'Nagarik', 'Kachchalimbu', 'Waghi', 'Benwad', 'Pandharawada' etc.
She has been working as a radio Jockey and Asst. Producer with All India Radio, Mumbai Centre for 13 years, and boasts of an extensive experience of 15 years in dubbing and voicing.
She has been awarded as Best Actress, Zee Gaurav for her role in 'Aaydan' and as Best Supporting Actress, Zee Marathi Awards for her role in 'Yeu Kashi Kashi Mi Nandayla'.
Shilpa Sane -
She has been performing for more than 15 years in Marathi – Hindi plays, films, marathi and Hindi T.V. serials and web series.
She has had the opportunity to perform with stalwart artists like Pandit Satyadev Dubey, Sushma Deshpande, ArunKakde (Kaka), Sunil Shanbaug, and Sapan Saran in plays such as ‘Narad Ragavlay Arthat Adlay Maza Theater’, ‘Sangeet Baya Daar Ughad’, ‘Aaydan’, ‘Gavat Hoil Shobha’, ‘Loretta’, ‘Backstage Wala Kuni’, ‘Char Don Tukde’, ‘Shahanpan Dega Deva’, ‘Woh Kaun Chitrakar Hai’, ‘The Thing Is’ etc.
Shilpa Sane was the Associate Casting Director for the film ‘Disciple’ by Chaitanya Tamhane. She has also worked as an announcer and production assistant for All India Radio, Mumbai’s Asmita Vahini.
Similarly, she also works as a voice-over artist for Marathi & Hindi Films and Web series.
Directed playlets (small plays) performed by visually impaired and mute students of the Drama School.
Awarded by Zee Gaurav with the Best Actress Award for her performance in the play ‘Aaydan’.
